Rep. Maxine Waters called out Attorney General Jeff Sessions following this week’s developments in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe.
“Sessions doesn’t remember what he said, when he said it, & where he was when he said it. Don’t blame him,” the California Democrat tweeted Friday afternoon.
“Time to go back to the plantation,” she added.
When Sessions gave testimony during a Senate hearing in June about Russia’s influence on the election, he said “I don’t recall” numerous times.
A number of Democrats have called on Sessions to return to Capitol Hill, under oath, to testify, after documents unsealed this week appear to dispute his prior testimony in which he denied knowing about a proposed meeting with Russians and former Trump campaign staff.
During a March 2016 meeting, President Trump and Sessions met with former campaign adviser George Papadopoulos. Papadopoulos reportedly suggested Trump should consider traveling to Russia to meet with Russian government officials, with whom he had connections.
Earlier Friday, Trump said: “I don’t remember much about that meeting. It was a very unimportant meeting. Don’t remember much about it.”
Papadopoulos recently pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russian nationals.
This is not the first time Waters has criticized Sessions. In September, she tweeted: “To Jeff Sessions, how does it feel to be dragged & humiliated? Now you know how the African Americans you disrespected feel.” The tweet was in response to reports of Trump’s anger at Sessions for allowing the appointment of Mueller.
